1974 Jaguar E-Type V12 Open Two Seater Recommissioning

The E-Type Series 3 was introduced in 1971, with a new 5.3 L Jaguar V12 engine, uprated brakes and standard power steering. An automatic transmission, wire wheels and air conditioning were available options. The V12 was equipped with four Zenith carburettors, and as introduced produced a claimed 272 hp, more torque, and a 0–60 mph acceleration of less than seven seconds.

The new longer wheelbase offered significantly more room in all directions. The Series 3 is easily identifiable by the large cross-slatted front grille, flared wheel arches, wider tyres, four exhaust tips and a badge on the rear that proclaims it to be a V12.

We first got to know the 1974 Jaguar E-Type OTS on a cold January day when we were asked by it’s current custodian to inspect the vehicle on his behalf before purchasing it. We knew the V12 was an older restoration that has been in storage for almost day years. As the E-Type has not been driven following it’s restoration, we were expecting to see the '“usual” post storage issues. Our pre purchase inspection service books one of our technicians for the 8 hours allowing time to verify the vehicle thoroughly inside and out. We have generated a report with our findings, allowing the buyer to purchase the classic Jaguar with confidence and with information at hand.

Following the purchase, we have proceeded with correcting certain aspects of the previous restoration for originality. Our main concern was the age of the rubber seals and gaskets and so we proceeded with the renewal of all suspension bushes, water hoses and brakes. Unfortunately due to the uninspired choice of rubber brake hoses, brake fluid sweat through the unsuitable pipe and leaked all the bulkhead. Our in-house metal workers took the affected panels back to bare metal to expose the real damage, with a trip to the bodyshop to follow next. We have stripped the top of the engine, suspension and rear axle to address all maintenance issues.

Following the complete reassembly, we have spent over 200 miles testing all functionality and further bedding in. We recommend using only the best Millers Classic Oils lubricants, including engine oil, high performance brake fluid, rear axle and gearbox oil.
