The team at P&K Thorntons drove to Belgium at the end of September to compete in the Spa Six Hours Race. After getting the car in January as a project, we restored it and entered it into the hardest classic car race in the world. Despite a mistake in the qualifiers, knocking down our starting position, we finished in the 41st position out of 81 and came first in our class (GTS7) as we ran close to standard certifications pre-63 GT regulations.
Our apprentice Jamie won The Simon Diffey Heritage Motorsport Apprentice award. Jamie is in his second year as an apprentice at P&K Thornton Restorations working as a ‘classic body work technician’ along with studying at the Heritage Skills Academy. The award was created in honour of the historic racing driver, Simon Diffey, who was killed in a road accident in 2022. Jamie will be receiving his award at the ceremony on the 19th of September 2024 for all his hard work and commitment to learning the trade. The award came along with many prizes including support towards gaining a racing licence and tickets for an international race. This is a fantastic achievement for our young apprentice and we look forward to continuing to work with Jamie for the foreseeable future.

The first race is always a daunting one! After the problems we suffered at Donington Historic, we went back to the drawing board of engines building to diagnose the oil leak and booked in for another race weekend with Equipe Classic, this time everything went as it should and we scored a couple of class podiums.

A 5 speed gearbox was fitted to the formidable E-Type to better adapt it to the modern traffic..
This week we focused our efforts on metalwork. With several restoration projects in the PKT workshop requiring panel attention, we started with the Mk II 3.8 that was in need of an engine bay complete tidy up. With the engine, transmission and all ancillaries removed, now it’s the time to correct the tired looking engine bay. We’ve started by removing the old flaky coating to exposed original factory primer, always a good sight!
