We want both safety and comfort: How a couple of alterations prepared this E-Type to be more useable for it’s owner.
Our customer had recently acquired this Jaguar Series 2 E-Type and had brought it to us to give it a check over, which is where we noticed a few minor problems that we knew would make it a much safer, reliable and useable car.
The Jaguar E-Type is a car that has captured the hearts of both collectors and enthusiasts. The Series 2, which was produced between 1968 and 1971, came with upgrades and refinements which enhanced the driving experience while keeping the same charm that came with the original Jaguar E-Type Series 1.
However, that set of refinements are now coming in at nearly 60 year old and are in need of a little bit of TLC as we see so often here at P&K Thornton Restorations and this car was no exception to that - the wiring loom had seen better days after being subjected to nearly 60 years of environmental effects. So we got to work on bringing a new lease of life to this car by giving it a brand new wiring loom throughout with much more modern, and therefore, lightweight wiring which will now make this car last many more years while lessening the worries of electrical issues which can affect most older cars.
Another key feature of having a new wiring loom is the safety that comes with it. There are less chances of electrical fires and greater reliability overall and that was what was required by the owner.
The next issue we identified was that the car had been given modern tyres which had increased the overall footprint of the tyre to road surface this made the steering much heavier. Noting that this was an elderly customer we discussed fitting EZ power steering which we have fitted numerous times to various E-Types in the past. He agreed with us and that small change has made a massive impact as the owner wanted to be able to take the car to shows and local events and this upgrade made the car more useable for our customer.
Next we identified issues with the hood on the car as the original had developed lots of sag over the years, which made this particular OTS lose some of its original shape and charm. The hood replacement is another service we have provided multiple times here at P&K Thornton Restorations. It really is amazing how such a thing can have an impact on the look of the E-Type. The owner was pleased with how much difference the new hood had made and could barely contain their excitement when they saw the improvements.
After all of these issues were identified and corrected we gave the car a general service and check which included replacing the worn suspension bushes. We always check the vehicle ourselves after any work is carried out, which means you don’t have to and you can be confident your car is returned to you with complete peace of mind.
